We all have read several instructions about (not) singing in the classroom, sharing instruments and playing games with our students due to the danger of spreading the COVID 19. We are deeply concerned about our students’ safety and at the same time seek for ideas to make our lesson interesting and safe (in person and in distance learning).
What about listening to excellent music? It can never be out of a music lesson. Here are some ideas I tried to during this hard period: Vivaldi’s "The Four Seasons"through my Listening Maps offer a completely safe way to involve kids with music.
Children will realize the musical form of these pieces, imagine pictures of nature, listen to different rythms and tempos, recognize string instruments, drawtheir own pictures on the maps, try their own melodies for these pictures of nature and more.
In the first book children watch videos about Venice, paint carnaval masks, see Venetian style paintings and learn about the Baroque era. They also get to know Spring mvt 1 with videos, games and activities.
In the 2nd part, Vivaldi recalls his days of success and travels in European cities. He introduces his Summer, Autumn & Winter through videos and activities.
In Summer we focus on birds voices, play games and have a chance to compose music imitating birds voices. In Autumn we learn about Dionysus, the Ancient Greek God of wine to understand the first 2 movements describing a feast and the drunkards' sleep. In Winter we make our own story about people walking in the snow, draw pictures, make melodies! Look at the video to learn more about the resource Presentation and Worksheets to introduce Musical Forms to children from K-3. The idea of form is presented in a simple way through many images and examples. The presentation can be completed in one teaching hour and is ideal for substitute teachers too. Since forms are created when combining same, similar and contrasting ideas, its very important for everyone to have this crucial ability. Movement and play are very important in learning at these ages. Young children have to move and play listening to music and aurally recognise the changes or the repetitions between the parts of a musical work, even without knowing anything about forms and any other terminology. This has to become an essential part of our music lesson. Adding to the experiential way to learn about forms, the 28 Worksheets deepen the understanding with ...
I'm an Elementary School music teacher. I work in Greece and I've also taught music in a charter school in the US for 2 years. In this blog I'll share ideas about music in education. "A boat full of sounds" is the name of this Blog and of my teaching resources shop as well. Most of my teaching experience is with children age 6-12, but many ideas can be adopted to fit the needs of other ages. I love bringing a variety of music genres in my lessons, classical music, traditional, jazz and many others. I also love guided or free improvisation and enjoy helping children make their own music. What will you find in this blog? My own or other people’s ideas about all the above areas. I’d also love to be in touch with people with the same interests and get ideas from them. Meanwhile you can have a look at some resources I have published in TES and Teachers Pay Teachers websites. TES Teachers Pay Teachers Hope you enjoy it! Chrysi Parpara Stay tu...
